I visited my uncle’s soba restaurant, “Menkobo Kikuchi,” in Kohka City, Ibaraki Prefecture last month. The beautiful old Japanese house and its lovely location provided a soothing backdrop to the delicious soba noodles, which were truly exquisite. Please note that the restaurant is only open on Fridays and Saturdays, so I recommend checking their operating schedule on their Facebook page if you plan to visit. 場所が分かりづらいため、グーグルマップを利用することをおすすめします。このお店に足を踏み入れると、周囲の雰囲気が一変し、非常に印象的です。
敷地内に車を駐車することはできませんので、手前の砂利の駐車場に車を停め、このアプローチを歩いて進んでいきます。このアプローチも期待感を高める要素です。手すりが竹でできており、その曲線や細部に丁寧な仕事と工夫が感じられます。茨城県の古民家再生協会の方たちは、施工者が多いため、皆さんのスキルを発揮できる場所だと思います。こうした背景も考えながら、入口に向かいます。
Since the location can be a bit tricky to find, I recommend using Google Maps for guidance. Once you step into this restaurant, the surrounding atmosphere changes dramatically, leaving a lasting impression.
You cannot park your car on the premises, so you’ll need to park in the gravel parking lot up front and walk along this pathway. Even this approach adds to the sense of anticipation. The handrails are made of bamboo, and the attention to detail and craftsmanship is evident in the curves and intricate design. I believe the Ibaraki Prefecture’s Old House Restoration Association provides a great platform for skilled artisans to showcase their talents. Keeping these factors in mind, let’s head to the entrance.
「kominka翠」という大きなメイン看板が非常に印象的です。看板の効力もまた非常に重要です。入店前に施設の特徴や情報について知っていると、お客様もより興味を持ち、訪れる際の期待感が高まるでしょう。観光地のような心理効果もあると考えられます。こうした要素も素晴らしいと思います。お金をかけずにもインパクトを持つ看板を建築に工夫されていることに感銘を受けます。
The prominent main sign, “Kominka Sui,” is highly impressive. The effectiveness of signage is also crucial. Having knowledge of the establishment’s features and information before entering can pique the interest of customers and enhance their expectations when visiting. There’s a psychological effect similar to that of tourist destinations. I find these elements truly remarkable. The thought and creativity put into creating impactful signage without spending a fortune is truly inspiring.
入口には立派な門があり、ここから始まるという心理的な要素も非常に重要です。このアプローチは非常にメリハリのあるものになります。左にカーブしながら門が見え、その奥には立派な古民家が広がっています。門の向こうへ早く入りたいという気持ちが湧き上がります。
There’s a grand gate at the entrance, and the psychological aspect of starting your experience from here is equally important. This approach creates a sense of anticipation as you curve to the left and catch a glimpse of the impressive old Japanese house beyond. You’ll find yourself eager to step beyond the gate.
建物に近づくにつれ、まるで江戸時代にタイムスリップしたかのような感覚が広がります。映画のロケーションにいるような気分です。この古民家は、昔の形状と雰囲気をなるべく壊さず、現代の建築とは異なるコンセプトを大切にしています。実は、この古民家は宿泊施設の一部であり、その中にお蕎麦屋さんが入っているのです。まるでテナントのようなイメージです。こんな素晴らしい場所に入店できたことは、叔父にとってもありがたいことでしょう。
As you get closer to the building, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the Edo period. It’s almost like being on a movie set. This old Japanese house has been preserved as much as possible, maintaining its historical shape and atmosphere, distinct from modern architecture. In fact, this old Japanese house is part of an accommodation facility, and the soba restaurant is housed within it, almost like a tenant. It must be a great privilege for your uncle to operate in such a wonderful place.
こちらは店内の様子です。壁が土壁でできており、このような土壁は今ではなかなか見られないものです。素晴らしく魅力的です。以前、改修前の状態で何度かお邪魔したことがありますが、その当時と比較すると、多くの労力と費用がかかって修復されたことが分かります。人々が訪れることで、建物に新たな息吹きが吹き込まれる感覚を抱きました。当日もたくさんのお客様で賑わっていました。
Here’s a glimpse inside the restaurant. The walls are made of earthen plaster, a rare sight nowadays. It’s truly charming. I’ve visited a few times before the renovation, and comparing it to how it used to be, it’s evident that a lot of effort and expense went into its restoration. The influx of people visiting brings a fresh breath of life to the building. It was bustling with many customers during my visit as well.
土間が満席だったため、こちらで食事を楽しませていただきました。この場所は、古民家の洋間の雰囲気がとても可愛らしくコーディネイトされています。実際、らんまんの撮影にも使用されたことがあるようですね。家具も重厚感があって素晴らしいですね。
Since the tatami area was fully occupied, I enjoyed my meal in this area. The Western-style ambiance in this old Japanese house is beautifully coordinated. It seems it has even been used as a filming location for movies. The furniture exudes a sense of grandeur and is truly impressive.
これまで食べたお蕎麦とは一味違います。このような雰囲気でいただくお蕎麦は格別です。お蕎麦は冷たく、しっかりとした食感で、非常に美味しかったです。
The soba I had here was unlike any I’ve had before. Enjoying soba in such an atmosphere is truly special. The soba was served cold with a firm texture, and it was incredibly delicious.
てんぷらの写真は撮り忘れましたが、この写真の奥にあるのがてんぷらです。田舎やさいのてんぷら。てんぷらとお蕎麦の組み合わせって最高ですよね。
I forgot to take a photo of the tempura, but what you see in the background of this picture is the tempura. It’s rustic vegetable tempura. The combination of tempura and soba is simply divine, isn’t it?
デザートを出してくれまして、そば団子とあんこです。もちもちで甘すぎない味付けが癖になりそうです。これでかなりお腹はいっぱいになり古民家翠を後にしました。帰りは帰りの景色がまた変わってくるものです。
After being served dessert, I enjoyed soba dumplings with red bean paste. The chewy texture and not overly sweet flavor were quite addictive. With that, my stomach was pleasantly full, and I bid farewell to the old Japanese house, Sui. The journey back home brought another change in scenery.
庭も広いため、職業柄の視点で見ると、その管理が大変だろうと思います。しかし、路盤についても石や砕石でメリハリが付けられており、建設業の方のアイデアがたくさん詰まっていると感じました。
The spacious garden, from my professional perspective, seems like it would require a lot of maintenance. However, even the pathways have been meticulously crafted with stones and crushed gravel, showcasing the creative ideas of those in the construction industry.
入店時には、左側の古民家に目を奪われ、この竹の道には気付きませんでしたが、帰り際に素晴らしい雰囲気の竹の道を見つけました。手入れを怠ればただの竹藪になってしまう場所が、このように道を整備し手入れすることで立派な竹林道に変わるのですね。こうしたプロセスは図面では表現しきれないもので、竹を選別し、切り、残すことを現場で慎重に行うものだと思います。
When I first arrived, I was captivated by the old Japanese house on the left and didn’t notice the bamboo path. However, on my way back, I discovered this enchanting bamboo path. It’s incredible how a place that could become a mere thicket of bamboo can be transformed into an impressive bamboo grove path through careful maintenance and landscaping. Such a process cannot be fully conveyed in blueprints; it involves the careful selection and pruning of bamboo on-site.
このように、叔父のお蕎麦を楽しみながら建築見学も行ってきました。ここは非日常を体験できる場所であり、頭が疲れたらここで癒されることがおすすめです。その後、コーヒーが飲みたくなり、境町に戻りました。友達とどこでコーヒーを楽しむか考えた結果、欲し芋カフェに行くことになり、こちらでコーヒーだけを楽しむことができました。お腹がいっぱいで、もう何も食べられませんでした。失礼ながらですが。古民家でお蕎麦を食べ、境町で干し芋のスイーツとコーヒーを楽しむのも素晴らしいコースです。ぜひ足を運んでみてください。
In this way, I combined the enjoyment of my uncle’s soba with architectural exploration. This place offers an escape from the everyday, and I highly recommend it as a place to relax when you need to unwind. Later on, I found myself craving coffee, so I returned to Sakai Town. After contemplating with friends where to enjoy our coffee, we decided to visit the “Hoshigaimo Cafe,” where we could simply savor coffee. My stomach was already full, so I couldn’t eat anything more, and I hope you’ll forgive my lack of appetite. Indulging in soba at the old Japanese house and then relishing sweet potato sweets and coffee in Sakai Town is a fantastic combination. I encourage you to visit these places if you have the opportunity.
